Print, printed matter, or printed work is a product made by means of a printing technique and a publication reproduced by means of a printing technique (Vikipedia). Examples of printed matter are: books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, brochures, information materials, business cards, repro etc. A very versatile and broad field.
There are different requirements for printing which it is advisable to follow and be aware of:
different printing technologies are used: digital printing, offset printing, etc.
print file: the print file is usually a PDF, according to the standard), preferably preflight-checked with Adobe Acrobat Pro or PitStop software. It is advisable to indicate in the file name the image format and how much bleed space has been left.
pre-press: the files are checked for compliance with the printing specifications and, if everything is in order, the order goes to print.
transport of files: files are sent to the project manager by e-mail.
print file design: the customer submits the (designed) print file requested in the order.
fonts: fonts must be correctly included or converted into objects.
bleed: it is necessary that no white surface is visible as a result of folding, binding, cutting, etc. shifts. Bleeds must be taken into account when preparing the design file for the publication, when positioning details, when framing photographs, otherwise something important may be lost during cutting or post-processing. A bleed margin is necessary for all backgrounds, images or any objects that extend to the edge of the print. In addition, care must be taken to ensure that important elements of the print are no closer than 3-5mm to the edge.
the slightest tolerances in post-processing will reveal variations when parallel lines are close to the edge of the page.
staple binding: the shifting of pages must be taken into account, depending on the paper and the number of pages.
perfect binding: the spine of the publication must also be taken into account and, if necessary, designed separately. The spine thickness depends on the thickness of the paper, and the number of pages of the cover paper and the content paper of the specific cover paper chosen must be used to calculate the appropriate spine thickness.
spiral binding and comb binding: it should be borne in mind that the spiral edge of the publication will be perforated.
die-cutting: the drawing must be vector - line and definitely do not make the die-cut as a picture. Use a continuous line: red is a cut, green is a groove and yellow is a perfo. The die-cut consists of one three-page file or three separate files showing only the die-cut, the die-cut with print and the print file. We strongly recommend that you check the presence of a bleed.
